Digital listening

Online conversation moves faster than a newsroom and is harder to read. We tell clients what is being said, how far it is travelling and whether it matters, without overreacting to the loudest voice in the room.

During a live matter our digital listening team, led by Priya Venkatesh, reports twice a day, and more often when the situation requires it: what is being said about the client in news, social and specialist media and in public forums, how far it is spreading, who is carrying it, and whether it is changing what journalists, regulators or customers are asking.

The reports are short and they say what we think, not just what we found. Volume is not importance; a thousand angry posts from people who will never buy from a client may matter less than one question from a specialist reporter who is about to write a long piece. We tell clients the difference.

Between matters, we set up standing listening for clients who want it, with thresholds agreed in advance for when the duty partner should be told. Digital listening covers public material only.

What it involves

  • Twice-daily listening reports during a live matter, with a short written view
  • Standing listening between matters, with agreed thresholds for escalation
  • Analysis of how a story has travelled: from where, through whom, and how fast
  • Monitoring of specialist forums, trade press and regional media alongside the national press
  • Post-matter analysis for the board

In practice In 2025 the team produced 2,163 listening reports for 74 matters. The longest-running matter needed reports for 211 consecutive days.
